ECU Test System using Raspberry Pi3

The Engine Control Module (ECM), also known as an Engine Control Unit (ECU), is a type of Electronic Control Module that is responsible for maintaining optimal engine performance. The ECU receives data from a number of sensors, which is interpreted using multidimensional performance maps (lookup tables). Following each reading, the engine actuators are adjusted accordingly. Examples of components that are controlled by the Engine Control Unit include:

  • Air/Fuel Ratio
  • Anti-Theft Control
  • Cruise Control
  • Electronic Valve Control
  • Idle Speed
  • Ignition Timing
  • Variable Valve Timing

Modern ECUs have a microprocessor that can monitor and process the various engine sensors in real-time. The ECU also has the capability to communicate with other modules to ensure optimal performance across all electrical components of the vehicle.

We have developed a specific testing pattern for Test & diagnosis of Engine Control Unit.

Raspberry Pi helped us to get the result what we wanted. Raspberry pi is a great embedded system not only for prototyping but also, for industrial and vehicle/automobile applications.

We design the hardware, written firmware and software, and did all of our own testing. Calibrating and reverse engineering ECUs is also a part of the process. We have also used Relay board and micro controller, CAN bus to automate the process. Key ECU Parameters are tested using the Test system.

If required for PCB Visual Inspection option also provided with in the system to Connect with External Scanner to capture the Image and then do a deep visual evaluation of the circuit board and all the electronic components. From water or acid corrosion, to fire or burn damage, ECU memory is also scanned to make sure that it is working properly.
